Khameleon is a Mortal Kombat character that thus far has only appeared in the Nintendo platform-specific editions of two games: Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. She is of the same race as Reptile; a saurian, or raptor, from the realm of Zaterra, which was overtaken by Shao Kahn’s Outworld forces after the Zaterran warriors lost in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Allied with the forces of good, Khameleon considers Shao Kahn her mortal enemy for the destruction he wrought upon her home.

Khameleon’s backstory is vague. According to her biography and ending sequence in Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Khameleon is from Zaterra like Reptile and both are the last of their kinds. Her race, which is known as saurian or raptors, were originally from Earthrealm but later moved to a new realm which they dubbed Zaterra, or “New Earth”. However, Shao Kahn discovered Zaterra, drove the raptors to near extinction, and then merged the realm with Outworld.

This angered Khameleon greatly. She sought revenge and vowed to destroy Shao Kahn once and for all. Khameleon approached Reptile for his aid, but she was unaware that the male Raptor was an accomplice of Shao Kahn. She then spent an indefinite amount of time wandering the realms searching for a plan to kill her nemesis. During the events of Armageddon, she learned that the winner of the tournament would be granted ultimate power. Khameleon sought out these powers for herself so that she might use them against Shao Kahn.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy

Khameleon informs Reptile, another one of the last surviving members of the raptor race, about how Shao Kahn destroyed their home realm of Zaterra and annihilated their people. This news turns Reptile against Shao Kahn, and Khameleon successfully ambushes Kahn in a sneak attack, leading to Kahn’s death and the unification of Earth. With this freedom, Khameleon and Reptile are able to bring about a new generation of raptors.

After defeating Blaze and claiming the prize, Khameleon unleashes her new powers on Shao Kahn. Seeking revenge for the destruction of her homeworld, Zaterra, she transforms him into a powerful raptor, utterly subservient to her. She then does the same to Shao Kahn’s followers. However, she loses control of this new power and accidentally transforms all of the other fighters into her raptor servants as well. This act leads to the rebirth of Zaterra’s might.

According to the September 2006 issue of Official Xbox Magazine, it was hinted that Khameleon would appear in 3D for the first time in years but Midway producer Shaun Himmerick confirmed it at the Games Convention in August 2006 that she will not appear in Armageddon.

After Armageddon was released for the PS2 and the Xbox, fans complained for leaving out Khameleon. Art Director Steve Beran stated that the reason Khameleon was left out was because of time factor (they didn’t have time to put her into the game). At the 2007 Winter Gamers Day event, Ed Boon and Shaun Himmerick finally confirmed that Khameleon would be a playable character in the Nintendo Wii version.
